The vulnerability factor – MLM can change your life, not just your income.

Put yourself out there. Risk and find reward.

Whenever I see a site or post about Multi-level Marketing(MLM), the common theme goes something like this: “Make your dreams come true!  Make more money than you ever imagined possible! Own your life!”

OK, let’s examine. I am all for owning my life. I work in the Canadian healthcare system. I am subject to union negotiations and that alone is enough to drive anyone into the land of entrepreneurship. Yes please, it would be nice to have some control.

Make my dreams come true. Huh. What dreams? You mean the dreams of just making it through the week and ending up with enough money to pay our debts AND have a little left for dinner out? Are those dreams? Because if not, then I know not that of which you speak. Wow…really sad, but true. What the heck ARE my dreams?

Make more money than I ever imagined possible through MLM. Well, easy enough because I really did not think you could make more than $300-$500 a month selling a product by word of mouth advertising. So any more than that is more than I imagined!

After only 6 months working as an Arbonne Independent Consultant, I truly believe all the above statements are entirely possible. However, these things cannot be achieved simply by ‘joining in’ with a company and just letting everyone know. You can buy into the product a little or a lot, but the more you spend on you initial purchase STILL does not determine how well you will do as a consultant or how well you learn to ‘own your life’.

When we step out on a limb and start a new business, we are putting ourselves ‘out there’. We become subject to criticism from all angles. This is an extremely vulnerable position. Some people cannot manage feeling so exposed. They cannot tolerate the repetitive sound of ‘No’ when the offer of their product or business is declined. They react to hearing no and the resultant feeling of shame by getting aggressive, or simply losing faith in the business as a whole. They quit and walk away, making sure to tell every single person they encounter what a ‘scam’ MLM is.

Timing can be vital. Personality is key. Are you the kind of person that has the confidence to withstand hearing ‘No’ again and again? I personally loved the analogy of the waitress/waiter offering coffee to diners.  They are employed to walk around to each table and ask that complex question: “Coffee?” If you tell them “No thanks.”, do they get upset? Do they feel rejected? Do they question whether they are truly made out to be servers? No, of course not. They ask again and again unfailingly. They circulate and play the numbers game, surely SOMEONE is going to want coffee? If you treat your business the same, asking everyone and simply moving on without an emotional reaction when you hear ‘No’, you can succeed.

This is a simple concept, but when we examine the strength of character required for this persistence, it is NO wonder that 90% of attempted MLMers fail. Show yourself some compassion. Allow some time to read, learn and study how to succeed in this business before you judge it. Do you really believe in yourself and your ability to create a successful business? Do you really believe that the products are outstanding and have a unique solution to your clients problems? Do you understand and believe in the model of multi-level marketing? Do you believe in your company and their values?

You MUST have concrete belief in yourself, your company, your product and the dynamic system of MLM to succeed. The ability to create something fresh and new that is entirely your own places you out front and centre. As vulnerable as it gets. Embrace this space of fear and push through. Allow your mistakes to become your pivot points, turning you toward your goals daily.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit: Out on a limb.

Standard

PENTAX Image

The spirit of an entrepreneur. Is it possible that it exists intrinsically everyone? The brutal truth is ‘no’, it is not in all of us, but in some it lies dormant like a sleeping dragon.

Many of us grow up hearing the same phrases, repeatedly echoing from the mouths of elders. “Go to school. Work hard. Get a good job.” That is success. This is the dream. This is as far as they want or expect you to reach. In truth, now that I am a Mother myself, I can empathize! Perhaps they are  just trying to keep us safe. They want us off the street. They want us to be able to feed ourselves, pay our mortgages and put clothes on our back. Our parents want to know that if they were not around, that we will be ok. It is understandable. Many a respectable life is led this way.

There are a rare few mentors though, that have the sense to inspire a little more. Or perhaps, the entrepreneurial spirit is burning stronger in others by nature. The need to work outside of the basic rules and framework established by school, job, school and then (hurray!) career. Energy and inspiration seems to burn aflame in these fantastic folk. They persist and keep reaching every day for what they want, ‘rules’ be damned! They fail. A lot. But they just keep on going! ‘No’ does not resound harshly and deflating to these ambitious types. It just means not yet, keep going.

Of course, the spirit may move us conventional types later on in our lives too. In my case in particular, the shift was unintentional, unexpected and subtle. I keep reading a quote that inspires me. “Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. That’s where all the fruit is.” It now has a permanent place on my vision board. A vision board is a fantastic tool for those of us in transition. We are just babies when it comes to following dreams. Vision boards are our baby walkers…helping us to form the permanent ability to walk and then run on our own. Dreaming and pursing those dreams becomes a daily habit, not a random act when you get frustrated with your job.

Psychologically speaking, not every human is capable of thinking this way. For some people, their hardwiring is too permanent. They are not only unwilling to change, they cannot comprehend the need or desire to strive for anything other than security. A steady income is a safe harbour. These folks need offices, desks, deadlines, rules, policies, co-workers to complain to and a boss to lead them. They can be harsh and cruel to the entrepreneurs when someone breaks free of the structure. “You will fail!” “Are you crazy?” “Why would you risk all this?” (insert arm-wave gesture sweeping from worn grey carpeting up to buzzing fluorescent lights).

I can tell you now why branching out on a limb is all worth it. Self-discovery. You will learn more about yourself in a month than you can learn in a decade of working at a JOB (just over broke!). Where are your strengths? Where are your weaknesses? What are your fears? How strong is your vision and your belief? Can you make the changes necessary to achieve your goals? The freedom to dream about possibilities will keep you energized beyond any dose of self-inflicted ‘caffeination’ in your old routine.

So let them bray… it’s ok. To walk a separate line takes great courage and the insights you will gain are tremendous.  So climb up that trunk and stare at the branches. Choose one that looks good to you. One that speaks to you. Take a deep breath and start climbing.

Let’s face it. As a society, we continue to covet things that are beautiful and that make us beautiful. Women in particular, but men are beginning to catch up. Creams, lotions, hair dye, sprays, emulsions, tints, BOTOX (good lord do you know what that stuff really is???) and the like.  However, I can only hope by now that a decent minority of people are stopping for at least a few seconds to turn those bottles and cans around to read what they are applying on their bodies.

Look around, do you see any grave sites for euthanized pets or roadkill? How about dead stockyard animals too sick to eat? That’s right, not a one. Animal waste is very efficiently recycled (read: heated up and boiled) into different grades of tallow. Have you ever made chicken soup from scratch? Well, that fatty layer that we typically scrape off the top is the layer of fat that can be delightfully used by the cosmetics industry as emollients and fillers for all of your beauty needs. So, the next time you defend your bottle of $3.99 shampoo that smells as though an entire rainforest of tropical plants has been unrooted and stuffed inside, take into consideration where the ingredients came from and what you are really applying to your skin and hair. Do your research. Look for a safer product.

Is it worth it? You tell me. Your skin absorbs whatever you apply to it directly into your bloodstream. There is no filter. Even when you eat, there is some small amount of defence via digestive enzymes. I experienced a heightened awareness of this with my first pregnancy. All I could envision was chemicals going straight towards the unsuspecting fetus inside me. Very uncool. Poor kid never stood a chance! So I changed the way I looked at skin care.

Yes, it WILL cost you more. Be selective and make the change for products that cover your whole body, regularly. Shampoo/conditioner, body cleanser and body lotion at the very least. I owe it to myself and my family to shift finances and make it happen.

Things that I will cheap out on:

Home decor – Honestly…I have small children and I could care less! Don’t get me wrong, I love a great looking space but I am not willing to waste money on expensive pieces. Particularly at this time in my life.

Clothing – Again, running after kids every day does not jive with a pair of 6″ Michael Kors sandals. Hit the thrift shops. You will feel like such a smartie pants when you find an amazing deal!

Things that I cannot afford to cheap out on:

Skin care – When you start doing a little reading, you will get where I am coming from. Look at the labels, know the nasty ingredients to avoid. You may not be able to avoid all of them in all your products, you want to retain a little performance out of your products right? Check out this link to David Suzuki’s website to learn more about his ‘Dirty Dozen’ list of chemicals you should avoid.

Food – Organic fruits and veggies are a top priority for me. Not only do they taste better, but I want the companies that make them available to stay in business.

We are just getting started in this revolution. In Canada, there are only a handful of chemicals banned for use in cosmetics. In Switzerland, there are over a thousand. We will catch up, but until then, there are better options readily available.

I happened across one particular company that provides a better option 6 months ago and was so impressed with their standards and performance that I became an Independent Consultant. I started a home-based business with Arbonne that grows simply by referring the products to friends and family.

Building castles…my new profession!!

Building castles…my new profession!!

So entrenched in the bustle of everyday ‘To Do’ Lists, I had lost the ability to dream. By dream, I mean to make a list of what I want from my life. For myself and for my family. I found the spark to allow me to open my mind to every possibility again. What about you? What do you want? Do you still dream or have you forgotten how to build a castle?

Tips from a Multi-level Marketing Newbie.

Only a few months into this business…I feel that there are some glaringly obvious things that you just need to have in order to survive in network marketing. You can pay your up front fees and then wing it, or you can choose to get yourself prepared and get serious about starting a business that has the potential for massive growth.

Get a good ‘upline’ – Did the person that sponsored you into the company really connect with you? Are they taking the time to get to know you and YOUR goals? Have they asked what YOUR dreams are? Do they have a plan for your training or do they seem to just randomly throw info your way when they remember to? A good upline is SO vital. You are going to need solid training and motivation. You need to know how to sponsor new team members into your business…..sponsoring if the lifeblood of multi-level marketing. If you are not getting what you need, go HIGHER. Go to the top and ask what those people did to get there. You will find help and inspiration all in one!

Read like the wind! – I am absolutely LOVING every single book that has been recommended to me as a mandatory part of my training. Ditch the TV remote, stop playing the victim and get reading! You are in control of your own goals and dreams now. You will become a leader and you are likely going to need advice. My favs? The 45 Second Presentation That Will Change Your Life (Don Failla), Twelve Pillars (Jim Rohn), My First Year In Network Marketing (Mark Yarnell) and anything by Robin Sharma!

Know thy product – Sounds obvious, right? Jump in, use everything you can and become a product of the product. With my company specifically, Arbonne, this is an easy task. My skin has been transformed and friends and family have watched it happen. All I do is hand out sample packs and people want more. However, the general population is becoming very informed these days. You need to know what sets your product apart, why it works so well and what the benefits will be to the end-user. Study-up!

Learn to love rejection – My smarty upline in Toronto gave us a great analogy in training via Skype one evening at a team meeting. She said it like this: “If I told you that I was going to give you one thousand $100 bills and that if you could give them all away within one hour I would give you $10,000…could you do it?” At first I thought…yeah! Of course I could! But, think about it. People would want to ask ‘why’, to interrupt you, they might need qualification for why you were giving them money. Perhaps, some would even refuse, thinking that there was some ‘string’ attached to the offer. The same goes for offering the opportunity for multi-level marketing. You are offering people an amazing opportunity. The chance for them to take control of their lives and learn how to dream again. A home-based business that could change their lives. If they don’t want it??? MOVE ON! Don’t get offended….just keep asking! Thank the ones that say ‘no’ clearly and loudly…letting you move on to the next prospect who may really NEED that $100 bill and have the sense to recognize a wicked offer!

Believe and then prospect – Get your vision set solid in your mind. Why do you want this? What is happening in your life that you need to change so badly. What are your BIG goals? If it is 3 years from now and you and your team, family and friends are celebrating your huge success… what have you achieved at that point? If you do not have rock solid belief in yourself, your product and your business opportunity… you CANNOT communicate the potential to a prospect! Share your vision with such passion that people can feel where you are going and want to come with you even though they don’t even know all the details!

Get emotionally invested – Know your ‘why’. When you get frustrated and feel like you can no longer stand hearing ‘NO’, ‘Are you crazy?’ , ‘Are you involved in one of those THINGS?’ …you will need your ‘why’ more than ever. Stay true to the emotion behind the driving force of your action. Let it be your anchor while you drift through the experience of change and growth. You cannot help but be changed by this business and hopefully…if you follow my tips, it will be for the better!
